Matt, veneered or lacquered fronts? Choosing without compromise

We compare the character, durability and care of the finishes most often selected for bespoke furniture.

Fronts occupy much of our field of view, but their selection should not rely on an inspiration photograph alone. A finish must suit the intensity of use, available light, budget and the way it will age naturally.

Matt: calm and contemporary

Deep matt surfaces soften reflections and bring calm to open interiors. Modern coatings reduce fingerprints, but material quality is essential: an inexpensive matt can become polished in frequently touched areas.

Veneer: nature’s individual pattern

Veneer is a thin layer of real timber, so every element has its own grain. It brings the warmth of solid wood with greater stability. The sheets must be composed deliberately and protected with a suitable oil or lacquer.

Lacquer: complete freedom of colour

Lacquer offers precise control over colour and sheen. It is ideal for routed fronts and seamless floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. A high-quality lacquer system can also be professionally refreshed after years of use.

  • for a busy kitchen, prioritise surfaces that are easy to clean and repair
  • use veneer in living spaces as a warm natural accent
  • limit competing textures in full-height cabinetry
  • always make the final decision with a physical sample

The best material is not the most fashionable one, but the one that answers how the interior will be used.
